This brightness gives an idea of how badly the patient is infected with a particular pathogen. The brightest bands represent an overwhelming infection process. The brightness of the band (amount of the microbe), the virulence of the microbe (how deadly it is), and other factors yields a pathogenicity value for each pathogen which indicates which microbe(s) should be targeted for therapy first .
